Shaukat Hussain Khan ‘Niyazi’ was born into a family which has a rich tradition in Hindustani Classical Music. He is the son of the legendary Late Ustad Sharafat Hussain Khan Saheb- The doyen of the Agra-Atrauli Gharana.

Shaukat Hussain’s initiation into the world of music began at the age of five. Under the tutelage of his father, Ustad Shaukat Hussain’s prodigious talent blossomed. Later, after his father’s demise, he received guidance form his maternal uncles Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. He continued to take guidance from Shrimati Purnima Sen, a disciple of Ustad Sharafat Hussain Khan.

Shaukat Hussain Khan has emerged as one of the leading exponents of the Agra-Atrauli Gharana. Blessed with a mellifluous voice ranging over three octaves, his rendition displays a perfect over Bol-Bant, Bol-Taan, and Layakari - features that are distinctive of his Gharana.

Shaukat Hussain KhanA versatile artist, Shaukat Hussain can sing Khayal, Dhrupad, Dhamar Thumri, Tappa and Bhajans with consummate ease. His repertoire of Ragas include Patmanjari, Barva, Dhanashree, Malati Basant, Maluha Kalyan, Khem Kalyan, Ram Sakh, Bhav Sakh etc.

With a treasure trove of more than 200 traditional Bandishes, Shaukat Hussain is a performer of exceptional merit. He has been invited to participate in various music conferences and has performed at various concerts in Indian and abroad.               

Besides winning accolades as a performer, Shaukat Hussain is also credited with grooming a new generation of performers in the Agra-Atrauli Tradition. He is currently the divisional head for vocal music at the Saptak School of Music, Ahmedabad, and provides invaluable guidance for young, aspiring singers.
