Ghulam
Husnain Khan, popularly know as ‘Raja Miyan’ was born in an
illustrious family of traditional musicians of the Agra Gharana, which
has given India such giants as Aftab-e-Mausiqui Ustad Fiyaz Khan, Ustad
Vilayat Hussain Khan, Ustad Khadim Hussain, Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan,
Ustad Sharafat Hussain Khan and many others. Son of the late Ustad Anwar
Hussain Khan, another famous ustad of the Gharana who was well know for
his skilful rendering of rare Ragas, Raja Miyan inherited a remarkable
understanding of music. After the untimely demise of his father, Raja
Miyan started his formal training with his uncle, Padmabhushan Ustad
Khadim Hussain, a deeply respected guru of the Agra Gharana who was well
known for his phenomenal knowledge and erudition. Raja Miyan was
intensely groomed by Ustad Khadim Hussain Khan Saheb for over a decade,
almost until Khansaheb’s death. Raja Miyan also received talim from
Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan, Khalifa of the Gharana.
Absorbing
the best of Agra Gharana traditon, Raja Miyan was groomed to present the
beauty in ‘bandish’, with a special love for both ‘sur’ and
‘bol’ mixed with a fine sense of ‘lai’. Rendered in a sweet,
resonant and pliable voice, performances by Raja Miyan are true to the
tradition of his Gharana. Marked by Dhrupad-like ‘non-tom’, 'bol
tans’, ‘bol banav’ and 'bol baant’, Raja Miyan’s gayaki is
authentic and reflects the strong influence of his uncle Late Ustad
Latafat Hussain Khan. He is among the few artists of the Agra Gharana who can carry on undiluted and in full measure the glory of
Gharana.
Raja Miyan has given
scores of private and public performances. The title “Sur-Mani”was
conferred on him by the prestigious Sur Singar Samsad. At
a very early age he was selected by the Maharashtra Government
to participate in programmes sponsored by it and now regularly
performs for the State Government in various districts of
Maharashtra. Raja Miyan is also a regular artiste on All India
Radio and TV. Besides he is regular performer of almost all
music mehfils all over the country.
