Qamar Mohammed Khan was born in the year
1939 at Atrauli, Dist. Aligarh U.P., in the family of musician belonging to Agra/Atrauli
Gharana. His father Ustad Ghulam Mohhamed Khan was a fine classical singer and a great
teacher. Qamar Mohammed took his initial training in music from his father. Later he
became the gandaband shagird of hi Brother-in-law stalwart of the gharana. It was Anwar Hussain Khan who intensely groomed
Qamar for over two decades with vigorous talim in music. He gave him complete knowledge
and taught him all aspects of music specially the fine aspects of Agra/Atrauli Gayaki,
Which made Qamar Mohammed a Fine
Musician.
In the year 1956 he has participate in
the All Indian Music Competition organized by AIR and stood second in the competition and
also got the prize from the then, president of India, Dr, Rajendra Prasad. He was also
associated with All Indian Radio for quite some time. In 1961 he went to Mumbai with his
guru and taught many students there.
In the year 1963 he has of offered
teaching assignment by Aligarh Muslim University which he has accepted and taught music
there for over a period of 35 years till he got retired in 1998. During hi period he has
done a tremendous job by encouraging young generation to learn classical music and kept
over country’s tradition alive. He ha also worked very hard for the development of
classical music in the remote place like Aligarh
He also taught many students some of
them became popular classical singers. During his association with Aligarh University,
Colleges
and music circles of the states of U.P he has also been invited by
many music colleges and
music Institutions as an examiner. He has also attended and participated in many seminars
end discussion on music organised by music collages and Institutions.
He has participated in music conferences
all over the country, particularly Patna, Allahabad, Calcutta, Delhi, Lucknow, Banaras,
Ahmedabad and Mumbai etc. he has also given many duet performances with his elder brother
Ustad Shafi Ahmed Khan. At present he has settled down at Aligarh with his Mission to
develop interest in classical music among the younger generation.
